Using a VPN on Stake: what its terms say happens

Stake's binding terms prohibit using a VPN, proxy or similar service to mask location, and reserve penalties for a player found doing it. The terms separate masking a location to get round territory rules from using the tool for privacy.

In short, from the documents

What happens if you use a VPN on Stake?

Stake's terms prohibit masking your location with a VPN or proxy. Stated penalties: balance forfeited, account closed, bets voided. The money penalty reaches the balance, so the whole account is exposed, not one bet. The operator decides when to apply them. Its terms name 13 restricted countries in full. That list is open-ended.

What this page is for

This page does not recommend using a VPN and does not explain how to use one. It sets out what Stake's own contract says happens to a player who does.

The clause, as the terms write it

The location clause, verbatim, from the document Stake publishes as binding. The penalties in the next table come from the VPN clause sweep, read 2026-09-22, which follows the clause into the remedy sections it points to.

Binding document
The attempt to manipulate your real location through the use of VPN, proxy, or similar services or through the provision of incorrect or misleading information about your place of residence, with the intent to circumvent geo-blocking or jurisdiction restrictions, constitutes a breach of Clause 5 of this Terms of Service.

How the remedies were traced

Clause 14.4. The prohibition is qualified by intent: it bites only on an attempt made 'with the intent to circumvent geo-blocking or jurisdiction restrictions', so a VPN used for ordinary privacy from a permitted country is not caught by its own terms. The remedy runs through clause 5.2, 'Stake reserves the right to close or suspend Your Stake account at its own discretion and void any bets to the extent applicable by law', and clause 4.21, which entitles Stake 'to void any bets placed by You following such actions by You or to withhold and/or retain any and all amounts which would otherwise have been paid or payable to you (including any winnings) to the extent permitted by law'. A first attempt to fetch this page from a French exit address returned the ANJ regulator's block notice rather than the terms; the document was retrieved on a second attempt.

What the terms say can happen

Each penalty in the register's vocabulary, and whether Stake's terms reserve it for a player found masking location or playing from a restricted territory.

PenaltyIn the termsWhat it means for the player
balance forfeitedReservedThe operator can keep the money in the account, winnings included.
deposit forfeitedNot statedThe deposit itself can be kept, not only what was won with it.
account closedReservedThe account can be shut, and what is paid out of it is then the operator's decision.
bets voidedReservedSettled bets can be cancelled, which removes the winnings on them.
withdrawal refusedNot statedA cash-out request can be held or turned down.
identity documents demandedNot statedIdentity and address documents can be demanded before anything is paid.

The terms leave the choice of remedy to the operator.

Where the terms say you cannot play

Stake's terms name 13 countries in full as restricted. Parts of 1 more country are named too. The list is open-ended, so a country missing from it is not a country the terms allow. The list, country by country, is on the Stake restricted countries page.

What this means in practice

The forfeiture clause reaches the balance, and the balance holds deposits and winnings built up before anything was detected. A player found in breach stands to lose the account, not a single bet.

Identity documents carry a home address, so a residence in a restricted country can come to light whenever Stake asks for them. Its KYC terms are classed as discretionary; the clause is on the KYC page.

A complaint about confiscated funds goes to the operator first and then, where a route exists, to the licensing authority. Both read the same contract, and the player accepted the territory clause on sign-up. What a licence issued in Curacao gives a player with a complaint is set out on the Curacao licence page.

Where play needs a local licence

In the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, France, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Portugal, Australia and Canada (Ontario), online casino play needs a licence issued in that country, and no operator on this register holds one. For those countries the register publishes the legal position and the helpline, not a ranking. A VPN does not change which law applies to the player. Each country's position is on the map.
