Can you buy crypto with a credit card?

In the US, Coinbase, Kraken and Gemini accept debit cards, not credit cards, for crypto purchases. Crypto.com's Pay on-ramp lists credit cards at a 3.99% fee. Where a credit card purchase goes through, Chase, Capital One and American Express agreements class it as a cash advance with a 5% fee, minimum $5 or $10.

Mostly no, if you are in the US. Coinbase, Kraken and Gemini accept debit cards from US customers but not credit cards, according to their own help pages read on 14 October 2026. Where a credit card purchase does go through, the Chase, Capital One and American Express agreements read the same day treat buying crypto as a cash advance, with a fee of 5% (minimum $5 or $10) on each transaction.

So the card side brings a higher fee and a separate APR, and the exchange side mostly refuses the card in the first place. No exchange or card is recommended here; the tables record what each document says.

Coinbase's "Payment methods for US customers" table lists a debit card and no credit card. Kraken is explicit:

For US clients only debit cards are supported at this time.

For non-US clients Kraken accepts "debit and credit cards that are enabled with 3D Secure". Its currency table gives a $10 minimum purchase in USD and a rolling seven-day card limit of $1,000 to $5,000. Gemini's card article says: "We do not accept credit cards or prepaid cards." Its debit limit is $1,000, refreshing every 24 hours.

Crypto.com is the exception on this list. Its Pay On-ramp article lists "Credit Card / Debit Card (MasterCard and Visa)" and covers the "United States (except the following states: Hawaii, Nevada, New York, Texas)", for a "3.99% transaction fee plus the network fee." Its general purchase-fee article mentions only "an admin fee" shown on the preview screen, and warns of issuer fees for "certain merchant category codes." Cash App's own funding rule, a Cash balance, linked debit card or linked bank account, is in how to buy bitcoin with Cash App.

Is buying crypto with a credit card a cash advance?

At the three issuers read, yes. Each names crypto in the cash advance definition of its cardmember agreement.

Chase's agreement:

Cash-like transactions will be treated as cash advances.

Its list of cash-like transactions includes "purchasing travelers checks, foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, other similar digital or virtual currency and other similar transactions." A separate Chase page on funding other accounts says such use "is like withdrawing cash, which has a cash advance fee and APR."

Capital One's Q2 2026 agreement defines a Cash Advance as "a loan in cash or or a transaction for things we consider cash equivalents, which may include wire transfers, travelers' checks, money orders, foreign currency, cryptocurrency", followed by lottery tickets, gaming chips and wagers. The doubled "or" is in the original.

American Express's Cash Magnet agreement, dated 17 April 2025, counts as a cash advance "cash equivalents, including travelers cheques, gift cheques, foreign currency, money orders, digital currency, casino gaming chips, race track wagers, and similar offline and online betting transactions."

Capital One's agreement adds: "We will begin charging interest on cash advances and transfers on the transaction date", so the usual grace period does not apply. The exchange's own fee comes on top. Kraken's page warns that "Card issuers may impose additional fees (e.g., cash advance or international transaction fees) beyond Kraken's fees."

Can a crypto credit card buy crypto?

Not the Gemini one. Its cardholder agreement, dated 25 September 2026, says the card may not be used "(e) for the purpose of funding your Gemini account directly or indirectly, (f) for the purchase of cryptocurrencies". Using it that way puts the account "in default", and WebBank "may block such transactions and/or terminate your Account." The same section bars "domestic or international gambling purposes." The full terms are in the Gemini credit card review.

Card-by-card gambling rules for other crypto cards are in crypto cards and gambling, and the card register holds each card's issuer and fee record.

Can you charge back a credit card crypto purchase?

A chargeback covers the card transaction, not what happens after. Once the crypto leaves the exchange it cannot be pulled back on-chain. The limits of chargebacks on crypto and casino purchases are set out in can you charge back a casino or crypto purchase, and paid "recovery" offers in the scam recovery page.
