To transfer bitcoin to Cash App, open the Money tab, tap the Bitcoin tile, select Deposit bitcoin and copy the address shown, then send to it from the other wallet. Cash App accepts up to $10,000 worth of bitcoin on-chain in any 7-day period, and up to $999 every 7 days over the Lightning Network. It accepts BTC only.
All of this is from Cash App's help centre, read on 14 October 2026. The help pages contradict each other on one detail, the address format, which is covered below.
How do you find your bitcoin address on Cash App?
The Deposit Bitcoin article gives four steps:
- Tap the Money tab on the Cash App home screen.
- Tap the Bitcoin tile.
- Tap Deposit bitcoin.
- Copy your bitcoin address.
The same article says bitcoin withdrawals and deposits "must be enabled within the app" first. Then the part people miss:
Your wallet address will change after each successful deposit. Check for the most recent address before making a transfer.
A saved address from a previous deposit is a stale one. The help page does not say what happens to coins sent to an older address, so that is not verified. Copying a fresh address for each transfer avoids the question.
What kind of bitcoin address does Cash App give you?
The help centre gives two answers. The Bitcoin Addresses article lists the three families (Legacy addresses starting "1", P2SH addresses starting "3", and Bech32 or Native Segwit starting "bc1"). Under the bc1 entry it says "Cash App uses these for deposits", and later: "For customer deposits, Cash App uses P2WPKH Segwit addresses." The summary line on the same page, and on the Deposit Bitcoin page, says: "For customer deposits, Cash App uses P2SH Wrapped Segwit addresses."
P2WPKH addresses start with bc1; P2SH addresses start with 3. Both formats are standard and any current wallet sends to either, so the conflict matters less than it looks. The address shown in the app on the day is the one to use. For outgoing transfers there is no conflict: "Cash App allows withdrawals to all valid address formats", and since 1 December 2021 that includes Taproot.
On-chain or Lightning: what is the difference for a deposit?
| Bitcoin Network (on-chain) | Lightning | |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | $10,000 in any 7 days | $999 every 7 days, send or receive |
| Time stated | Can take hours | "Almost instant" |
| What you share | Bitcoin address from Deposit bitcoin | QR invoice, or cashtag@cash.app |
| Invoice expiry | Not applicable | 72 hours |
| New York | Available | Not available |
| Recorded on the blockchain | Yes | No |
Sources: the Deposit Bitcoin and Lightning help articles. The Lightning page says limits are rolling and "reset at the top of the next hour." Its own example: $500 sent on a Tuesday at 2:05 PM is available again the following Tuesday at 3 PM.

How do you receive bitcoin on Cash App with Lightning?
The Lightning article lists the steps: Money tab, Bitcoin tile, tap the arrows, tap Receive bitcoin, optionally add an amount, then share the QR code or show it to the sender. "Bitcoin sent to cashtag@cash.app will go to the Bitcoin Balance in your app." The sender does not need Cash App, only a Lightning-enabled wallet.
Two fee points apply. Receiving Lightning as bitcoin carries no fee in the pages read. Receiving it as dollars, a setting called Receive Lightning as dollars, costs a 0.9% service fee, deducted from the amount. Once a $999 Lightning limit is hit, the help page says QR payments fall back to the Bitcoin Network.
Sending bitcoin between $cashtags is a different thing and no longer exists. The Sending and Receiving Bitcoin article: "As of 12/20/24, we no longer support sending and receiving bitcoin between $cashtags." Lightning and on-chain addresses still work.
What happens if you send the wrong coin to Cash App?
It is lost. The deposit article:
Cash App only supports Bitcoin (BTC). We do not support any other type of cryptocurrency, including BCH or BSV. Sending non-supported cryptocurrencies will result in loss of funds.
The Lightning article says the same for Bitcoin Cash and calls it "permanent loss of funds." Wrapped bitcoin on Ethereum or another chain is not BTC either. A deposit from an exchange that offers several networks for BTC has to go out on the Bitcoin network itself.
How long does a bitcoin transfer to Cash App take?
On-chain, "it can take hours before transfers into or out of your Cash App are confirmed on the blockchain", per the deposit article. Lightning is described as almost instant. No minimum deposit appears in the help pages read: not disclosed.
Scam patterns around deposits
Cash App's scam page lists "Fake Deposit Reversal Claims", where someone offers to speed up a pending deposit for a fee in crypto. Its answer: "Cash App will never request crypto from a customer to speed up transactions." A deposit that is slow is waiting on blockchain confirmations, and nobody outside the network can hurry it. If money has already gone to a scammer, the routes are on the scam recovery page.
