Is bitcoin untraceable? What the ledger, casino AML policies and exchange terms show

In short, from the documents

Is bitcoin untraceable?

Bitcoin is not untraceable. Every transfer sits on a public ledger, and the whitepaper says privacy rests only on keeping addresses unlinked to names. Stake and Shuffle say every crypto deposit and withdrawal runs through Chainalysis, and the DOJ has traced and seized over 94,000 bitcoin in one case.

Bitcoin is not untraceable. Every transfer is written to a public ledger that anyone can read, and the original whitepaper says privacy rests only on "keeping public keys anonymous". Two casinos on this register, Stake and Shuffle, state that every crypto deposit and withdrawal runs through Chainalysis. The US Department of Justice traced and seized more than 94,000 bitcoin in a single case.

What a player's bitcoin reveals depends on who is looking and what they can join it to. The ledger shows amounts and addresses. An exchange or a casino that holds an identity document can attach a name to them. The documents below were read on 9 October 2026, except where a register record is cited with its own date. Nothing here is financial advice.

Is bitcoin anonymous, according to the whitepaper?

Pseudonymous, by design, and the whitepaper is plain about the limits. Section 10, "Privacy", says the bank model hides transactions, and Bitcoin cannot, because it must "announce all transactions publicly". What is left:

The public can see that someone is sending an amount to someone else, but without information linking the transaction to anyone.

Bitcoin whitepaper, section 10, retrieved 2026-10-09

The same section names the weak point. A new key pair per transaction helps, but "Some linking is still unavoidable with multi-input transactions, which necessarily reveal that their inputs were owned by the same owner." Then: "The risk is that if the owner of a key is revealed, linking could reveal other transactions that belonged to the same owner."

That last sentence is the whole business model of blockchain analytics. One address tied to one verified identity, at an exchange or a casino, and the history around it opens up.

Can bitcoin transactions be traced?

Yes, by anyone, for free, at the level of addresses and amounts. Every transfer carries the sending addresses, the receiving addresses, the amount and the time, and it stays on the ledger permanently. Tracing a payment from one address to the next needs nothing more than a block explorer.

What needs more is turning addresses into people. That takes one of three things: a regulated business that collected identity and links it to an address; analytics software that clusters addresses into entities using patterns like the multi-input rule above; or a legal order that makes the business hand over the link. Casinos and exchanges sit in the first group, and several now buy the second.

What do crypto casinos see about a deposit?

On their own documents, a great deal more than the ledger. Stake's anti-money-laundering policy, read on 9 October 2026:

Every single crypto deposit or withdrawal both indirect and direct will run through Chainalysis

It adds that "Stake will screen a user's wallet address against applicable sanctions databases", that "Such screening measures will rely on third party blockchain forensics vendors such as Chainalysis", and that:

Stake may refuse to withdraw to certain "high-risk" addresses as determined in consultation with Chainalysis risk scoring.

Shuffle's policy carries near-identical language. Section 5.2 says "Each crypto deposit and withdrawal will be run through Chainalysis and reviewed for signs of fraud or suspicious behaviour." Section 5.1 sets the order of events: "Shuffle will collect any of the above KYC Information before issuing a Shuffle funding address (e.g., QR code) to customers." So at Shuffle the name is attached before the first coin arrives, and the analytics run on top.

Two more operators write the mixer case into their terms. Bitcasino clause 6.8: "We reserve the right to apply a wagering requirement of at least 5 (five) times the deposit amount if we suspect the player is using our service as a mixer." The register records the same five-times rule at Sportsbet.io, in its general terms. A casino treating a bet slip as a laundering tool is not a casino that assumes its deposits are untraceable.

How many register casinos publish their screening?

Of the 24 operators on the register, the records show a standalone AML policy read at 6. At Rollbit, Roobet and FortuneJack the policy could not be retrieved, Metaspins links one that was not read, and Bets.io, mBit and Wild.io link none from the pages read. Bitcasino's AML policy, read on 9 October 2026, describes a monitoring system that "shall monitor and analyze player transactions" and says suspicious transactions "shall be reported to Anjouan Licensing Services Inc. within 24 hours of detection", without naming crypto analytics. "Not disclosed" in the table means the document read does not say, not that no screening happens.

What do exchanges and wallets disclose about screening?

The exchange and wallet registers hold the clauses below, each quoted from the provider's own terms or privacy policy.

Uniswap Labs, whose wallet and interface are on the wallet register, is the most explicit:

We screen your wallet using intelligence provided by leading blockchain analytics providers.

Uniswap Labs privacy policy, as recorded on the wallet register 2026-10-07

The sentence before it says Uniswap logs "your publicly-available blockchain address" to "screen your wallet for any prior illicit activity". The providers are not named. Exodus's terms say "Exodus may screen users, transactions, wallet addresses, and IP information against applicable Sanctions Lists and comparable restricted party lists." MetaMask's terms allow that the issuer of its mUSD stablecoin and any "analytics, fraud-prevention, sanctions-screening, monitoring, or similar provider" may "monitor activity relating to mUSD".

On the exchange side, the binding clauses describe consequences more than methods. HTX:

If we determine that there is a suspicious transaction relating to your Account, we may, subject to applicable technical and legal limitations, suspend, halt or terminate the transaction, reverse the transaction and/or report the transaction to the relevant authorities, without notice to you.

HTX user agreement, as recorded on the exchange register 2026-09-28

Uphold's US agreement says it "may delay, suspend, or reverse transactions where required for fraud prevention, sanctions screening, BSA/AML review". An exchange that holds a passport scan and a deposit address needs no vendor to know whose coins arrived; what the screening adds is a score for where they came from. The consequences of sending exchange funds straight to a casino are covered in exchange to casino deposits.

Has law enforcement traced bitcoin?

Repeatedly, and the Justice Department publishes the cases.

DOJ releaseWhat was tracedSeizedMethod stated
7 June 2021, DarkSide ransomRansom payment after the Colonial Pipeline attack63.7 bitcoin, about $2.3 million"by reviewing the Bitcoin public ledger"
8 February 2022, Bitfinex hackBitcoin stolen in the 2016 Bitfinex hackmore than 94,000 bitcoin, over $3.6 billion"follow money through the blockchain"

In the 2021 case, the release says "by reviewing the Bitcoin public ledger, law enforcement was able to track multiple transfers of bitcoin" to an address for which the FBI held the private key. The Deputy Attorney General's line in that release: "Following the money remains one of the most basic, yet powerful tools we have". In 2022 the department described the result as showing "that cryptocurrency is not a safe haven for criminals." Both cases involved years-old or laundered funds. Neither is a casino case.

The same ledger works for victims. When a casino hot wallet was drained, the movements could be followed address by address on a public explorer, which is how the Duelbits post was written.

Is USDT more traceable than bitcoin?

In one respect, more controllable. USDT moves on public ledgers just like bitcoin, but its issuer can freeze it. Tether's terms let it "freeze any Tether Tokens held by you", and Tether says it has frozen more than $5 billion with law enforcement. Bitcoin has no issuer to ask. The details are in what is USDT.

What this does not show

How any screening vendor scores an address, which no document read discloses. What the 18 register operators without a readable AML policy do. Whether any casino has refused a withdrawal on a Chainalysis score: no register record shows one. Privacy coins and mixers are outside this page. Nothing here is advice on avoiding screening, and a casino's terms on what happens to a flagged balance are set out in failed KYC: what happens to the balance.

Quick answers

Is bitcoin untraceable?

No. Every transfer is on a public ledger. The whitepaper says privacy relies on "keeping public keys anonymous", and the DOJ seized more than 94,000 bitcoin in 2022 by following it "through the blockchain".

Do crypto casinos check where my bitcoin came from?

Two of 24 register casinos say so in writing. Stake and Shuffle run every crypto deposit and withdrawal through Chainalysis, per their AML policies. See the Stake entry.

Can a casino refuse a withdrawal to a flagged address?

Stake's policy says it "may refuse to withdraw to certain "high-risk" addresses" using Chainalysis risk scoring. Each register entry quotes the operator's own clause.

Does using a self-custody wallet make bitcoin anonymous?

No. The ledger is the same. Uniswap Labs says it screens connected wallets "using intelligence provided by leading blockchain analytics providers". Wallet register.
